How do I create a log file? I want to see the results of commands like M114 position. Where does this get written in Repetier Host software?

If you disable easy mode you can enable the log in the toolbar and see it then at the bottom. For a full log you can enable it in general settings and it will write it to a log file in work directory.

What does the "*#" (where # is a number) mean at the end of command lines in the log file ?

*xxx are checksums you would use if you send command in ascii mode. You can ignore this.
