Z-homing stops working after turning FEATURE_Z_PROBE on

I am trying to set up a sparkcube.

After all the basics (all axis move in the right directions, homing works),
next I wanted to progress to auto-leveling.

However, as soon as I set "FEATURE_Z_PROBE 1", homing doesn't work anymore.
The z_min_endstop doesn't even change states anymore when the probe is triggered.
When I try to autolevel, the z-axis moves in the wrong direction and then stops after about 30mm.

I'm sure I am overlooking something very basic here, but I just can't see it. Please help!!!

  • Does homing with z probe disabled work correctly?

    When z probe enabled z min will not trigger - instead z probe triggers. That is correct and because on low z you do not want to trigger before z=0 but many z probes do.

    Homing order for z probe should be one with temperature, so you can set xy position for probing. E.g. 100/100. Problem is often that probe can not be activated due to offset at xy home position. Set required temperature to 0 so it does not force you to heat for homing.

  • No you can not see it in menu. But you can enable it for debugging with host.
    M111 S70
    activates reporting changes to serial. Do not use in production as it can crash firmware when triggered too fast in a row.

  • Does z move at all?
    Does M119 correct end stops?
    I know you get a watchdog reset on z home if your stepper frequency gets too high. I saw you have 1600 steps homing with 10 mm/s so 16000 on a due. That is normally no issue and watchdog gets reset fast enough. Or does eeprom contain different values?
  • Z does not move during homing, when Z_Probe is active.
    With "FEATURE_Z_PROBE 0", Z-homing works without a problem - therefore I do not think the stepper frequency is an issue here.
    I can also move Z 'manually' using the position menu.

    M119 works:

    You home y max and need to move to y+ direction to activate z probe. That does not work with homing order XYZ so that might be the reason you fail. You must have home order with temperature (also set to 0) and set ZHOME_Y_POS 10 at least. Maybe it is just that. Also always watch for error messages in console when testing to get extra hints.

    after setting "#define MAX_HARDWARE_ENDSTOP_Z" from true to false the reset/crash does not occur anymore.

    Instead I get this reaction when homing (all or just z):
    - x homes
    - y homes
    - moves to defined x/y position for z-homing
    - moves in positive z by the amount defined in "#define ZHOME_HEAT_HEIGHT"
    - immediately moves back to x/y/z-position of beginning (all axis at once)
    - x and y are homed, z still shows as ?.??

    That is for z min homing! Hope this is not what you used for z max homing test.
    What was written in console on the test? That is where the information is.

    Since sequence worked I think the problem is in the z probe activation/deactivation.

    That will not work! Especially you can not move in activation when it is used in homing so you can start homing. Also what are you changing in eeprom? That is also bad - once because it wear eeprom writes and it might trigger internal updates. Also homing at the start and end of homing is bad idea (finish script). Leave the scripts empty and it will not crash any more.

    of course it was the scripts that caused the problems!
    My whole configuration was based on someone elses who has the same printer model.
    In hindsight it would have been faster to start my own configuration from scratch...

    Homing now works perfectly.

    Now to set up the rest of the printer...
