Problems with heating up printer bed and extruder

Hey guys, I am setting up a 3d printer for the first time and I am having trouble getting it to heat up. I can run either the bed or the extruder alone and they heat up fine but if I try to use both at the same time I get the 1 Command Waiting message in the bottom right corner. Any ideas?

    When you tell firmware to wait for target temperature just wait. Using sliders in manual control will not wait so the 1 command waiting should disappear fast or firmware crashed - hard to say without log. Maybe both at the same time use too much current?
