How do you select all object?

When I open multiple .STL files, they all go into an individual group. They also are all selected, I can move them in the 3D View. But if I select one of them, I must right-click all object to get them selected again (interesting when you have 20+ objects). I don't like the Autoposition function, made the bed a real mess. How do you select all groups (or objects) on the plate? Is there a shortcut key? I've tried CTRL-A, CTRL-SHIFT-A, SHIFT-CLICK, SHIFT-RIGHT-CLICK, etc.
