I am not familiar with the repetier forum system.
after asking a question I have a popup now that says "You've asked a question that now has answers.  Make sure you accept / reject the answer"  when I go to the forum the format is ... did this answer your question or reject the answer.....

the answer didnt fully answer my question .... it is a process of sharing information to get to the answer.  I dont want to reject the answer either.

can I simply accept the answer and still maintain communications with repetier on this thread of the question that I started.

If you accept thread is marked as answered so less users might check in since it is answered. So I think it is better to set answered if it is solved. As you see most threads are not answered so that is not special.
