display short messages

Hi ,
is there a way to show short messages on display without generating an UIAction?

i want to use G-code macros  started by buttons and show a short message on the display.

    M117 Some text
    will set the text for status line. But hosts may override this to show ETA, but at least for our hosts you could disable this.
