control printrbot with custom firmware

I am working on a simple project that requires controlling the printrbot simple metal.  I am only controlling the head position in x, y, and z.  The hot-end won't even be installed.

I know that this will consist mostly of sending g-code over usb but I need details on communication protocols and any peculiarities in the interface.  Can anyone point me to a resource for this information?  Worst come to worst I can plow through the source code for repetier or cura but being lazy, I was hoping to avoid that.

    I just realized how easy this would be if I went through an arduino and used the repetier firmware.  So I guess this question can be ignored.
