Raspberry PI`s for camera picture

Hi all, 
just wanted to know if it is possible to have RaspPi´s as "camera device".
Background: I eventually want to install Repetier Server to my home server to run 4 Printers with it.
For now I´m using Octoprint on 4 RaspPi´s - with RaspPi cams (not USB). - That´s why i want to "recycle" the PI´s as camera devices (you will know...RasPi cameras have this ribbon cables...)

    Yes that is possible. Just set up mjpg_streamer to publish the webcam and enter the ip and port and url to it in server. There is no need that the ip camera runs on the same device as the server.

    Is the fork of mjpg-streamer repetier uses, capturing still images from the video port or does it trigger the camera port for high res images?

    Still images use a different url but they have same resolution in mjpg_streamer. Reason is how the streamer works and it just sends last received buffer from webcam as image.
