trying to calibrate, but...

I used to be able to calibrate the step to mm by sending the command M501.

I would get something like:

M92 X88.89 Y88.89 Z1511.81 E88.57

and by changing those values, I can calibrate my dimensions.

But now, when I send M501, I don't get that response any more.

All I get is:

echo: stored settings retrieved

How do I turn that back on again?

Go back to your previous marlin firmware. That message comes from firmware not from host.
