Extruder temperature unreliable

Hi, if anyone has seen this I would appreciate hearing what they did to fix the issue.  I have been having intermittent problems with Repetier giving false readings of the extruder temp.  It will jump all over the place, from 80 to 75 to 120 etc.  Lately it is sitting at -20c and triggering the minimum temp alert, thus refusing to print.  Is this a hardware or firmware issue?

    This is a typical hardware failure. Your moves cause a short in the thermistor or a disconnection/break in cable. I think the latter is what causes -20. So check wiring of the thermistor and it should be gone if you find where it looses contact. AFten you get that it comes and goes with movement of extruder.
