DRIVE_SYSTEM

Hi,
I am trying to get a diamondhead to work with my mini kossel.  092

I go to the Wiki, get the diamondhead.h file, upload it to the configurator and make the changes...
It complies!!
Warning:  Low memory, instability yada yada

When I select Quick Settings ->  Home all   it just basically locks up.

Looking at an older config file, I see the difference is DRIVE_SYSTEM is set to 0.
In the new config, DRIVE_SYSTEM is set to 3.

When DRIVE_SYSTEM is set to 3, the steppers to not move.
When DRIVE_SYSTEM is set to 0, the steppers move.

Homing is an issue, though.   Let's say the head is all the way at the bottom - ~290mm,   homing will home one tower at a time, basically contorting the rods in a direction they don't really want to go.     How do I get all three motors to home at the same time?   I do not see a logical setting in the configurator for this?  At least not when I was looking at it.

#define HOMING_ORDER HOME_ORDER_XYZ
Is there an all at once?

Thank you.

  • You need DRIVE_SYSTEM 3. But deltas use much more memory so if output says free memory < 900 it is not enough and firmware can hang on some operations needing more stack ram.

    You need to reduce segments per line or move buffer lines. I'd prefer segements per line here as they are multiplied with move buffer lines. Reducing by 1 or 2 should suffice.
  • Cool, I will give it a shot.

    I had a working configuration at one point but lost it.

    FYI, here is the Ardunio build environment, verify compile result -

    Sketch uses 145,842 bytes (57%) of program storage space. Maximum is 253,952 bytes.
    Global variables use 7,654 bytes (93%) of dynamic memory, leaving 538 bytes for local variables. Maximum is 8,192 bytes.
    Low memory available, stability problems may occur.

    I will lower DELTASEGMENTS_PER_LINE  from 24 to 20 as a test.

    Sketch uses 145,832 bytes (57%) of program storage space. Maximum is 253,952 bytes.
    Global variables use 7,206 bytes (87%) of dynamic memory, leaving 986 bytes for local variables. Maximum is 8,192 bytes.
    Low memory available, stability problems may occur.

    Getting closer...
    DELTASEGMENTS_PER_LINE 18

    Sketch uses 145,734 bytes (57%) of program storage space. Maximum is 253,952 bytes.
    Global variables use 6,982 bytes (85%) of dynamic memory, leaving 1,210 bytes for local variables. Maximum is 8,192 bytes.
    Low memory available, stability problems may occur.

    1210, I'll go with this and report back in a few.

  • Still no movement.

    I went all the way to DELTASEGMENTS_PER_LINE 8
    No low memory, but still no motor movement and the screen stops.

    Changing from DRIVE_SYSTEM 3  to DRIVE_SYSTEM 0, motors move.
    DRIVE_SYSTEM 3  motors don't move.

    gong back to DELTASEGMENTS_PER_LINE  to 18, which puts me at 1210 bytes free, lower than the default of 24.

    Thank you for the help.

  • Here is my configuration.h   for a second set of eyes...

    If the firmware is in laser mode, it can control a laser output to cut or engrave materials.
    Please use this feature only if you know about safety and required protection. Lasers are
    dangerous and can hurt or make you blind!!!

    The default laser driver only supports laser on and off. Here you control the eíntensity with
    your feedrate. For exchangeable diode lasers this is normally enough. If you need more control
    you can set the intensity in a range 0-255 with a custom extension to the driver. See driver.h
    and comments on how to extend the functions non invasive with our event system.

    If you have a laser - powder system you will like your E override. If moves contain a
    increasing extruder position it will laser that move. With this trick you can
    use existing fdm slicers to laser the output. Laser width is extrusion width.

    Other tools may use M3 and M5 to enable/disable laser. Here G1/G2/G3 moves have laser enabled
    and G0 moves have it disables.

    In any case, laser only enables while moving. At the end of a move it gets
    automatically disabled.

  • Have you chechekd eeprom values or copied from configuration.h
    M502
    M500

    Wrongly set data for delta paremeters like diagonal length.. can make strange things, otherwise I have no idea.
  • No I have not.
    It could very well be, moving between 2 different firmwares.
    I remember setting the 16 virtual extruders somewhere.

    Can you explain what you mean by copied from configuration.h ?

    I also got a hold of Cyan, Magenta, Yellow filaments..

    Currently trying to get this to work with the RAMPS 1.4.   A replacement Rumba board should be here tomorrow and am hoping that is an easier integration.    The add-on exturder motor board on the RAMPs works, but hard to keep the pins straight between all the different wiki notes and firmwares and google searches.

    This has to work, so many 3 color prints out there.

    It has to be EEPROM settings, I had a working configuration.h at one point with the single color head.  (of course I lost it)

  • COnfiguration.h settings re only copied to eeprom if you change EEPROM_MODE, so enabling new things after first initalization might have them uninitalized, e.g. starting with drive system 0 you have no copy of diagonal length.
  • It is working... Well, that is, it's moving.    I suspect I messed up the pins.h somehow.  That file is somewhat of a cluster.

    Closing this issue and moving on to next one, which is hardware related;  there appears to be a 'dip' of sorts in the middle of my print bed of ~1 - 2mm.

    Thanks!
  • Ack.  Got my bed level, back to messing with firmware.

    The printer prints but stops in the middle of printing.   Crashes, reboots.

    I have turned down delta segment settings very low but still free memory is only 500 bytes.

    How do I get more memory available?      Do I dump the graphic display?

    What is the best controller and board to use for delta and 3 extruders?

    I read somewhere that you no longer have a delta with an AVR,  what do you use?

  • //#define DELTASEGMENTS_PER_PRINTLINE 24  // original value
    #define DELTASEGMENTS_PER_PRINTLINE 8  // new value

    printer is working.

  • Ok, I see it was a memory problem then. I think 8 is a harsh reduction. If you compile you see free memory in ram whcih whould be 900-1000 byte for error free functioning. So maybe 17 would be a good value if your buffer count is 16.

    By 2 deltas use Arduino Due + RADDS board. This allows 300khz and 600 updates per second and ram increases from 8kb to 96kb, so no real problems here.
  • Hi,

    Buffer count is 16, happy to lower that.
    I am test compiling changing the number,

    At 11, the low memory warning starts to appear, leaving 1993 bytes free.  Each additional delta segment per line adds ~112 bytes.

    12 = 1881 bytes free
    13 = 1769 bytes free
    14 = 1667 bytes free
    15 = 1545 bytes free
    16 = 1433 bytes free
    17 = 1321 bytes free
    18 = 1209 bytes free
    19 = 1097 bytes free
    20 = 985 bytes free
    21 = 873 bytes free
    22 = 741 bytes free
    23 = 649 bytes free
    24 = 537 bytes free

    Maybe I can go as high as 19.

    What exactly is this line doing?   If you can sum it up in one sentence.

    Using the cheap full graphic display, changing configuration to the text display says 3%, if I recall.

    I am happy you said RADDS board, I ordered on a couple of weeks ago.

  • It is the buffer for moves to execute. You need some to prevent running out of moves when data sending is too slow for a second. Also you need some buffer for optimizing the speed profile. So 16 is what you normally want at least. With enough memory I like 32 but in your case 19-20 would also be better. You need 900-1000 byte free to run stable.
  • Thank you for the explanation.
    I push to 21 but now radds board arrives.

    Rep, what dislpay are you using?  I ordered a PanelDue.
