Print randomly pausing at retract

I just built my first corexy and it prints pretty good.  I did not notice anything at first, but when I decided to do a torture test print I saw it randomly pause.  I thought maybe a bad USB cable or the buffer was running out because it always happened where it makes a lot of fast direction changes and stuff.  I swapped USB and watched the buffer and neither were the issue.  I did the exact same print on my AM8 with the exact same speeds, retract settings, board, drivers, steppers, extruder etc and it did just fine.

So I noticed that it was only doing this when it retracts and not every retract.  It will be fine for a minute then try to retract and the stepper goes really slow, and I'm talking barely moving slow sometimes.  It's not the same speed retract every time or I would think slicer settings.  Sometimes it's about 5 mm/s and others it's not even noticeable that it is moving unless you stand there staring at it for a while but then it retracts fine the next several times before retracting unbelievably slow ruining my print.  When it finally gets done with my 6 mm retract it will start moving at 100% again until another retract that makes it slow down.  I can run the same gcode again and it does this in different places each time.  

I've swapped Arduinos, TMC driver, stepper, USB cable, tried a different stl and even printed with no extruder stepper plugged in.  Nothing changes.  The only difference between this one and my AM8 is this is corexy and my AM8 is not.

Arduino Mega 2560 with RAMPS 1.6 and RAMPSXB
2 amp steppers with TMC 2130 drivers set to 1.5 amp (all fan cooled)
350W power supply
Hypercube corexy frame and gantry
Belt driven extruder for more torque

  • Ok looks like it’s a limitation of my board.  I guess the calculations for a corexy is just too much for my 8 bit board.  Looking into a better board.
  • How did you test? Printing with 50% did work fine I guess?

    Yes, you are quite edgy with the high resolution but I did not expect it taking that much CPU. But if printing slower works fine it is in deed a cpu problem. Due boards are then best solution.
  • Yea I was looking at the 32 bit boards you support and it looks like I can use a Due and RAMPS-FD or RADDS.  I really wanted the Duet because of the pure awesomeness, but cannot use Repetier and I really don't want to change firmware since Repetier is the best one I've used.

    I was reading up on the RAMPS + Re-ARM.  Would I just use the standard RAMPS 1.4 setting or is there a DUE based board I would choose for that?
  • Re-Arm is not compatible. They do not use the due processor. It is more a smoothieware clone with Mega 2560 pinout.

    Use RADDS if you can. That is what I develop on. If you use RAMPS-FD make sure to get the latest version and not the one with inverted heaters.
  • I was reading about the bad RAMPS-FD on another thread.  RADDS looks like my best option, but I'm worried about expandability.  I've only seen a 2 driver expansion board and since I use 2 dirvers for z that leaves me with only 4 extruder drivers.  I could possibly use 1 driver for Z and up the current to 2 amps since I have massive driver coolers.  At full speed those drivers were still cool to the touch (almost cold) while normally they get quite hot even at 1.5 amp.

    I'll be doing a lot of reading up on RADDS.  Any helpful links you know of?  Can I use my RRDFGSC or what display can I use like the RRDFGSC?
  • Found the extension board with 3 stepper slots.  I'll figure out the display and get it ordered.

    Next I'll need to figure out SPI for the TMC drivers.

  • There is a thread here where the author of the TMC extension describes how to tweak RADDS to support them. You need some extra cables for chip select I think it was.
