The button switching just means you are connected with a serial port. It does not mean host understands communication. See lower right edge if you see "x commands waiting" which is a good indication that there is no communication. In that case most likely the baud rate is wrong. Typical values are 115200 and 250000 baud.
Also if you switch to expert mode enable commands/ack to see if you get any answers from printer.
