Have you installed and configured repetier-server as well? Then server autoconnects first and host can not connect directly. In that case (which is best solution) you must not use serial connector but the server connector and connect to the server. Then host talks through server with printer with the benefit that it continues printing even if you close the host. Think of the server as a background printer process with web access so you can also watch and control from e.g. smartphone.
