Not really my field, but it normally is the current if it moves otherwise. If it gets too high also strange things happen. If it is not moving and only makes strange sounds it is a coil no getting powered or motor is blocked or you send steps to quick so it can not get running. Then try with very low speed to see if it moves and find what is making it go so high - wrong steps per mm, wrong microsteps, acceleration too high.
