Before starting to print you should manually move to see if distances make sense. Often steppers are not in the expected microstep mode or steps per mm are wrong so distances get completely wrong.
With Z you need to know that when it does not use a belt for z (untypical) it can only move much slower (5-40 depending on solution), needs much lower accelerations (50-100) and a low jerk (0.x). When you move a longer z distasnce and you her motor whine it looses steps for not having enough power for speed/acceleartion/start speed.
